For this year’s Chanukah celebrations, the Jewish Community Relations Council invited several organizations, including YWCA Dayton, to partner to “Be the Light to Standup Against Antisemitism” in collaboration with The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center’s Cincy Upstander Project.
As an #Upstander, YW commits to:
- Stand up for others and their rights
- Fight against injustice and unfairness
- Inspire action and help our community become the best of humanity, today
The project notes various character strengths needed to move this work forward, and asks Upstanders to write a commitment statement using a chosen strength. YW chose perseverance, and on the last night of Chanukah, YW’s President and CEO, Shannon Isom, joined JCRC and other upstander organizations at “Chanukah On Ice” to hear our collective commitments read aloud as all of the Menorah candles were lit.
As an Upstander, YWCA Dayton commits to shining a light on antisemitism with perseverance by knowing that we are not new to this, we are true to this; that for 151 years, we have worked steadfastly to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen our community. We stand united in our support of our Jewish community to say that hate has no home here, and together, we will build a brighter world filled with peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
YWCA Dayton wishes all who celebrate a very Happy Hanukkah.
