AmeriCorps VISTA: Food & Sustainability Coordinator | Position Description

Through the AmeriCorps VISTA program, YWCA Dayton, dedicated to the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism, seeks an energetic, dedicated person to be an integral part of our team.
VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993. VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for 45 years.

Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend after completing their service.

The Food & Sustainability Coordinator will build the capacity of YWCA Dayton by establishing relationships, and a robust supply chain, for low/no-cost food to serve our domestic violence shelters and transitional housing program. This person should maintain a high standard of service and hospitality at all times, as well as assure safety and confidentiality of residents and visitors. The Food & Sustainability Coordinator will be a key representative of YWCA Dayton, its mission and values.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect information on current food distribution at YWCA Dayton’s Domestic Violence Shelter and Food Pantry to generate a strategic plan for food services delivery.
  • Assess current resources and food providers and determine areas of growth.
  • Seek expert advice on producing nutritious food in bulk and serving diverse populations.
  • Develop strategies to maximize the use of donated food from the Food Bank, community gardens, and other partners.
  • Identify and connect with food providers to determine sources for food at minimal cost to the agency.
  • Collaborate with the Food Operations Manager to develop a recipe and ordering guide for producing healthy, seasonal meals in bulk.
  • Work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to grow the volunteer base for the Food Pantry and the 13×9 Club volunteer cooking program.
  • Establish a plan for improvement and growth of the Food Operations Program, including Domestic Violence Shelter Food Services, 13×9 Club volunteer cooking program, the Food Pantry, and the Welcome Home and Emergency Assistance food basket program.
  • Assess, improve, and utilize established policy and procedure to track metrics for success.
  • Assess, improve, and utilize established policy and procedure for food storage, food safety, and distribution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Proven high level of professionalism and poise during interpersonal interactions.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Flexibility, with the ability to handle many tasks with few errors.
  • Exceptional, proven organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, with the ability to quickly learn new programs.
  • Discretion regarding confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and championing of the organizational mission and vision.
  • Must be able to work independently and be an enthusiastic self-starter, who is intelligent, highly creative and innovative in planning; hard-working, punctual, detail-oriented, and personable, with strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED. Two years related experience in food programs/Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

COMMITMENT TO SERVICE:

  • Must be responsive to the needs and requests of clients, residents, staff and Board of Directors.
  • Must extend courtesy, friendliness and overall respect to all of the above.
  • Will collaborate with other staff and/or departments to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Will be available to times and events when evenings and weekends will be required to fulfill duties.
