Life Skills Support

The Homeless Crisis Response Program (HCRP), funded through state and local Emergency Solutions Grant funding, is designed to prevent individuals and families from entering homelessness and, where homelessness does occur, to rapidly move persons from emergency shelter into permanent housing.

Rapid re-housing is an intervention designed to help individuals and families that don’t need intensive and ongoing supports to quickly exit homelessness and return to permanent housing. Rapid re-housing assistance is offered without preconditions — like employment, income, absence of criminal record, or sobriety — and the resources and services provided are tailored to the unique needs of the household.

YWCA Dayton case managers actively help our residents rebuild after homelessness and trauma and prepare for safe, independent living by strengthening these core life skills:

  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Self-awareness and empathy
  • Resilience and stress reduction

In addition, each spring, YWCA Dayton hosts four cohorts of Kettering College nursing students, who operate a free health clinic for our clients and residents. Services offered include blood pressure checks, physical fitness exercises, and educational lunch-and-learns.

The YWCA Dayton Food Pantry is an in-house program that provides healthy food items, cooking/baking supplies, and nutritional information to the women and families we serve in our domestic violence shelters and transitional housing units. It is stocked in large part by community donations and operates year-round.

Financial literacy plays a vital role as women work toward independence and economic empowerment. Financial literacy is defined as the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being. Classes offered include:
  • Debt reduction
  • Budgeting
  • Credit card management
  • Credit report monitoring
  • Managing bank accounts
  • Building non-cash benefits
  • Planning savings
  • Identity theft prevention & smart technology use
  • Financial aid

YWCA Dayton offers more than 40 peer and support groups, open to both housing residents and domestic violence shelter clients. Topics include:

  • Art therapy
  • Faith studies
  • Financial literacy
  • Job readiness
  • Voter education & civic engagement
