Jane Marx

Vice President/Controller, Culmen Real Estate Services

An honorary member of YWCA Dayton’s Board of Directors, Jane Marx first joined the Board in 2013 – and immediately immersed herself not just in service to the organization, but in helping its dream of transformation come to life.

As a Partner with Miller Valentine and Vice President and Controller of Culmen Real Estate Services, Marx brought not only 30 plus years of experience in finance, but more specifically, expertise in tax credit accounting to the Board. At the time, YWCA Dayton had a vision to renovate its central building, home to Montgomery County’s only domestic violence shelter and a safe haven for nearly 100 women in need of safe, affordable, supportive housing.

The vision, which had been in the works for a decade when Marx joined the board, was still only a vision due to lack of funding. Marx was asked to chair the Building Committee within months of joining the board and she served, often as a Board committee of one, to successfully shepherd YW through the complicated process of securing Low Income and New Market Tax Credits needed to fund the project.

“Jane’s expertise proved invaluable and she devoted countless hours working with the CEO, finance team, and developers to negotiate with architects, lawyers, bankers and other financing entities at the state and local levels to secure the $17 million needed to get the project off the ground,” said Yvonne Isaacs, YWCA Dayton Board chair. “Funders said it was one of the most complicated financial projects they had ever put together.”

Today, the renovation – the largest ever in building history – is well under way and expected to be complete by the end of 2020. “She believes strongly that the work the YWCA does to empower women can be a catalyst for changing the lives of women and girls, and she has worked diligently to ensure the resources needed for successful programming remain available,” Isaacs said. “Jane has said, ‘This opportunity has allowed me to pay back what was afforded to me when I needed help. It has caused me to grow.”

Jane is Past President of Miami Valley Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), is a member of the National Association of Real Estate Companies (NAREC) and continues to serve on the YWCA’s Building and Finance Committees.
