Join us for our first Y-Dub Discussions of 2020 with a discussion and action plan on #YWomenCount: YWCA USA’s national campaign to support the 2020 Census. This conversation will be facilitated by Carie Schultz, partnership specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, who will be discussing the importance of a complete count in Montgomery County and how local citizens can get involved.
A full, fair, and accurate census is crucial to securing the strength and vitality of nonprofit organizations, like ours, that receive federal funding to provide domestic violence, child care, housing, nutrition, health, and other critical services. Women, girls, and families who may access federally-supported, life-saving services are also at risk of not being counted and missing out on the services they need. And, marginalized communities have been disproportionately under-counted in the U.S. Census. These “hard-to-count” groups have historically included communities of color, young children of color, immigrant communities, persons experiencing homelessness, formerly incarcerated individuals, those living below the poverty line, and many other marginalized communities and identities.
As in all of YWCA’s work, we center women, children, and families from these hard-to-count communities. Together, we can ensure a full, fair, and accurate census. Doing so gets to the very heart of YWCA’s mission: eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
YWCA Dayton is on a mission to eliminate racism and empower women. Previous Y-Dub Discussion topics have included School Board 101, which raised awareness for issues facing local schools, including the effects of trauma within the classroom; Recognizing Childhood Trauma, which explored toxic stress and the effects of lived trauma on our community systems; and YWomen Vote, which unpacked results of YWCA USA’s “What Women Want” report and looked at the political marginalization of women of color.
